EXTRA

Definition

"Extra" is slang for someone who is over-the-top, dramatic, or doing way more than necessary.

Origins

The slang term "extra" comes from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and has been used for years to describe someone who is overly dramatic, excessive, or doing way too much. It started as a way to call out over-the-top behavior, whether in a good or bad way.

Evolution

  • Early Usage: Has always meant "beyond what is necessary." In AAVE, it took on a more social and behavioral meaning, referring to people who are exaggerated, flashy, or doing the most.

  • 2000s-2010s: The term gained popularity in urban slang and was commonly used in casual speech, particularly among Black communities.

  • Mainstream & Social Media Boom: Around the mid-2010s, it became widely used online, especially in reaction memes and pop culture discussions. Celebrities, reality TV stars, and viral moments helped push the term into everyday conversation.
